Dog walkers and other visitors to the allotments and playing field over the past couple of days may have noticed that two new trees have been planted, one either side of the bench erected in memory of Ken Robinson, overlooking the cricket pitch.
They are flowering cherry trees from the Sakura Cherry Tree Project and, once established, will provide “single almond-scented blush white flowers in late March”. Wide spreading, the trees are a gift from Japan to commemorate the ongoing friendship with the UK, and their expected height after 10 years is up to 6m.
The Parish Council is hugely grateful to Catherine M
artin and Philip Turvil, residents of Badby and expert tree planters(!) who carefully planted, staked and mulched the trees on Saturday.
Another flowering cherry from the Sakura Project was planted last year in Pound Lane, to replace the one which blew down in 2020. We were able latterly to secure three more trees from the Project, and – subject to planning approval – the third one will be planted at the bottom of Stoneway to replace the existing tree which is, unfortunately, dying. All three will be added to the map on the Queen’s Green Canopy website which records trees planted in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Year.
We hope you’ll agree that they are a fitting addition to “Ken’s View”!
