With the frost of the weekend gone, Alex and Shaun completed the last pieces of nave roof sheeting where the roof abuts the tower on Monday 4 April.
A colleague cleared the inside of the church of the protective dust sheeting at the same time. Gill Nelson’s special cleaning team set about the inside on Wednesday doing a more thorough clean up and putting everything back in place.
Stonemasons Charlie and Matt were there too. They brought the first of the newly cut nave roof capping stones and hoisted them up. They also removed the loose nave gable end cappings ready for the lead flashing to be fitted.
On Thursday, the two stonemasons, Charlie and a different Matt, brought some more newly carved capping stones and some smaller pieces to be used to patch into eroded ashlar parapet stones. The architect carried out a further inspection of the stonework of the nave parapets during the strong winds. Further work for costing was identified using Peter Wakeford’s experience and advice. This will involve the replacement of three of the ashlar upstanding stones that are seriously eroded and some of the best worst-condition cappings were identified as really needing replacement now that facilities and skills are available.
Harry, Oscar and Darren completed the chancel parapet capping, the nave gable end flashings, then cut out the fixing grooves for the nave to chancel roof and tower to nave roof flashings.
In the fine weather on Friday the stonemasons laid the new cappings currently available and removed some cappings to get at the large parapet stones that are now to be replaced.
