Badby bird notes for May 2021 –

The usual summer visitors have been arriving over the last few weeks    The first arrivals were chiffchaffs and then blackcaps singing to announce their return. Swallows and house martins have followed overhead with common and lesser whitethroats in the hedgerows.

Some birds are just passing through. This probably included a redstart seen in Fennell’s field. They used to breed in Badby Woods in the last century. One or two people have heard cuckoos calling as well.

A bit further afield, there was some excitement recently when a wryneck, a rare woodpecker type species, turned up on Borough Hill in Daventry. It was seen by one or two villagers but has now moved on.
