Friday 27th February: War of the Buttons (1994) Comedy/drama about two rival boys’ gangs in Ireland – one working class, the other middle class – engaging in mischievous battles using humiliating tactics like cutting off buttons and removing underwear. Set and filmed in County Cork, it’s based on the popular 1912 French novel, La Guerre des Boutons. It examines issues of conflict and violence: how war can divide people who could be friends as easily as enemies. Written by Colin Welland and produced by David Puttnam. “Warm, lovely little film.”
Friday 13th March: Annual General Meeting. Our AGM will be followed by a free screening for members only of Wilding (2024). The story of a young couple that bets on nature for the future of their failing, 400-year-old estate, the Knepp Wildland in West Sussex. Ripping down the fences, they set the land back to the wild and entrust its recovery to a motley mix of animals, both tame and wild.
Friday 27th March: A Real Pain (2024) Two mismatched cousins reunite for a tour through Poland to honour their beloved grandmother, but their old tensions resurface against a backdrop of their family history. Directed, written by and starring Jesse Eisenberg, supported by Kieran Culkin.
