Saturday 16th November the Film Society will be showing the first of its Mid-month films : Much Ado About Nothing (2012)
Joss Whedon’s contemporary treatment of Shakespeare’s witty play has no well-known stars, and is shot in black-and-white. “Fizzing with humour, eroticism, booze and more than a hint of danger… light-hearted to a fault, [the film’s] giddy energy and intimate charm make for an entertaining romantic comedy – and a Shakespearean adaptation that’s hard to resist”[88 mins, 12A certificate]
Friday 29th November the film will be Peterloo (2018)
An explosively visceral retelling of a defining moment in British history, the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre where British forces attacked a 60,000-strong peaceful pro-democracy rally in Manchester. Written and directed by Mike Leigh, the film stars Rory Kinnear and Maxine Peake. “A brilliant and demanding film… Leigh’s populist anger remains undimmed.”
