Further to the last report on 13 July:
Sadly the excess heat on Monday 18 July was too much for the three chicks in the one box. I think that the proportionate reduction in feeds per chick must have meant they did not have enough liquid intake to cope with the excessive heat in the box. As far As I can tell, they were a bit underweight for their age at 39, 39 and 42 grams. I gather they should have been in the 45-50 grams range. I would imagine that is not unexpected when there are three in the brood.
In the other box there is definitely one chick surviving. It is possible the other is lurking near the entrance out of camera view. there is no sign of a grounded chick outside. It is also just possible it fledged although very much at the earliest likely date. The camera view is now partially blocked by something smeared on the lens so it is hard to identify action near the opening.
There is some better news. There have been about 10 swifts flying circuits in front of the house and ‘banging’ the nest boxes (flying up to the boxes and wall to find the openings and check occupancy). And a new pair have moved into the third box roosting there for the last four or five nights.
