The film for Friday 29th August is Benediction (2021)
The film follows the life of the acclaimed 20th Century English war poet Siegfried Sassoon as he is sent to a psychiatric facility for his anti-war stance. He embarks on a life-long quest for personal salvation through his experiences with family, war, his writing and his complex relationships. It’s the final film made by the acclaimed British director Terence Davies before he died. It stars Jack Lowden, Peter Capaldi and Simon Russell Beale. It’s a “profoundly affecting drama in the real-life story of a combat veteran whose poetry warned against the horrors of war.” 131 mins, 12 certificate.
Saturday 13th September is another of the Film Society’s Supper at The Opera nights with a showing of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi (2015)
The only opera Woody Allen has ever staged, this version is a revival of his 2008 production for Los Angeles Opera, a hilarious send-up of classical Italian cinema stereotypes. Plácido Domingo takes the title role as a marvellous parody of a Mafia gangster. It’s a hoot! The work is the third and final part of Puccini’s Il trittico (The Triptych) – three one-act operas with contrasting themes, originally written to be presented together. The aria “O mio babbino caro” is one of Puccini’s best known, and one of the most popular arias in all opera. 59 mins, Exempt certificate.
