Today (Thursday), investigation of the end of the main beam within the west wall, which holds the bell frame in the tower, showed very little corrosion. The cause of the masonry cracking was put down to there being less concrete around the end than would normally be expected and that the mortar around the concrete had cracked.
There was a lot of corrosion along the bottom angle of the south frame and this had to be lowered down the tower to be taken away for repair. Volunteers had to be called in for this, so thanks to Pete and Simon who assisted at short notice.
The van had to be partly unloaded to get the frame in, but it all fitted in well.
That left the floor pulleys for two bells to be removed from the clock-room floor
Neil was due to finish late afternoon and set off home. We next expect to see him when the frame painting begins in July.
